Green Woodwork is very accessible, and a great way to get involved in woodwork as a hobby, or even to take your skills further. A minimal amount of tools and equipment are needed to get started. The most important piece of kit and one that is used most of all in the workshop is the Shavehorse, in Ireland, it is also known as a Coopers Mare.

Stephen Ryan from Green Woodwork Ireland will teach you the skills needed to produce your own shavehorse over the space of three days. At the end of the course not only will you leave with your very own shavehorse, but you will also have enjoyed learning how to cleave and shape wood on the pole lathe and shavehorse, drilling holes and carving out the seat as well as assembling the components with Oak pegs. You will also experience using a large variety of handtools, these skills can then be used to produce your own woodcraft products.

If you want to learn plenty of green woodworking skills that you can use on your own projects this is the course for you.

This course is suited to all levels including complete beginners. As you will be working in a workshop environment, sturdy footwear is important. A good pair of boots is ideal and if you happen to have steel toe caps this would be even better. Open-toed or low-cut footwear is not suitable and may mean you cannot participate in the workshop. The tutor will supply safety gloves but if you have your own tight-fitting safety gloves feel free to bring them along, these safety measures are to protect your hands and feet from cuts and to protect your feet from sharp and heavy tools and equipment being dropped. You must be aged 16 or over to attend this class. Workshop times are 10.00am to 6.00pm.

Please keep in mind that some of the workshop tasks can be a bit physical, but help will be on hand if you find any of the tasks challenging.

The workshop will be held at the Green Woodwork Ireland Workshop, Minnowburn. Workshops are non-refundable and non-transferable.

Steve is a brilliant instructor, teaching us how to use a range of techniques including shaping wood with handtools and woodturning. As well as learning some of these skills, at the end of the course we each had a beautiful shavehorse to take home with us. I would recommend this course to anyone with a keen interest in green woodworking as the shavehorse is such a useful piece of equipment to have.
